Coteaux du Layon, Les 4 Vents, Pithon Paille, 2014

Situated on a gorgeous hill, with southern exposure, in Anjou, it took Jo and Isabelle three years just to secure their mere seven hectares from a patchwork of seventy different plots and twenty five different owners! So to say it has been a labour of love is something of an understatement.

Their Coteaux du Layon is a late harvested, botrytis affected Chenin from 40 year old vines and tiny yields of 20hl/ha. The flavours are just off the clock and for those of you unfamiliar with the delights of botrytised Chenin are in for a real treat. Lashings of rich peachiness are further softened by ageing in old oak and coat your tongue like a big, fruity duvet! Don't be fooled though, there’s none of the stickiness here that you would expect from a raisined Aussie sticky, as the acidity is nervy and razor sharp. If you must have it with pudding then make sure its not a sweet one as this is perfect with blue cheeses like Roquefort.
