Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos, Patricius, 2004

28.99

Introduced to Louis X1V by the Transylvanian Prince Rackoczi, and to the imperial Russian court by the Habsburgs, Tokaji can lay claim to being one of the world’s oldest and most remarkable sweet wines. A blend of botrytis affected Furmint, Harslevelu and Muscat et petit grains from 1 acre plots, it has a similar balance to great Sauternes. The wines sweetness is measured in Puttonyos, graded from 3 to 6 and it’s matured between 4 and 8 years in cool, damp underground cellars in Hungary’s north eastern corner, near the Ukrainian border. Flowers, citrus and dried fig dominate the nose, opening up to honey, apricots, marmalade and woodsmoke. Succulent, luxurious, full flavoured and balanced with incredible acidity, it is an absolute gem.
