Balgera, Valtellina Riserva Valgella, 2001

28.99

This is made by Paolo Balgera and is very traditional in style, using hand picked fruit, soft pressed with maceration on skins for about 12-14 days, and fermented in cement vats dating back to the 1950’s.  Ageing is for 2 years in large old oak barrels, followed by 2 more years in small old barrels and finally 1 year in bottle before release. There is no fining or filtration and use of sulphur is minimal.

So what’s it like, I hear you say? Well the nose is more Brunello than Barolo, delicate and floral with crushed violets and herbs, a touch of liquorice and tobacco, super-duper soft tannins – its old for God’s sake - and firmly tannic with a lash of clean acidity. Molto bella
