Brunello di Montalcino, Il Poggione, 2012

32.99

Perched high on the hillside overlooking the lush Maremma, Tenuta Il Poggione was established by Lavinio Franceschi in the late 19th century. Agricultural techniques were a tad more primitive in those days, although Lavinio recognised that the superior Sangiovese Grosso clone planted on an optimum vineyard site would yield a wine of exceptional quality and longevity.

Riper, firmer and richer than any unblended Sangiovese in the whole of Tuscany, Brunello (The local name for Sangiovese Grosso) is one of Italy's greatest red wines. This extraordinary example, aged traditionally in large oak barrels is made by Livia and Leopoldo Franceschi, the fifth generation to run the estate. Complex wines need simple, hearty food - try it with our Tuscan Sausage Sauce on Sourdough.
