Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc, Clos La Roquette, 2014

'Why do you always champion the white wines of the Rhone' , I am regularly asked. 'Just taste them', I reply, but that’s just scratching the surface. They are big, robust white wines and the absolute antithesis of bland, neutral, chatter fuel. The nose is complex, secondary rather than primary, with stone fruits and the creamy complexity of oak married with a floral and garrigue land personality interwoven with a big judicious punch of opulence warmth and alcohol. Manly whites if you will and certainly not for the frivolous.
This example from Chateauneuf du Pape has recently been snaffled by the Brunier family of Vieux Telegraph fame and is a blend of Rousanne, Grenache Blanc and Clairette – how’s that for individuality.
