If you head due south from Bergerac you encounter the wines of the middle Garonne. This former powerhouse of a region has rapeseed where vines used to grow and this is due to a distinct lack of understanding as to the brilliance of the wines of the Cotes de Duras, Buzet and Marmandais. If many were in the Medoc they would have classed growth status, and I don’t mean AC Bordeaux.

Clos Baquey is Elian da Ros’s top cuvee, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Syrah and Abouriou from limestone over clay soils and aged in barrique for 14 months. Dense and powerful with an intense nose of plums and black cherries, some coffee, liquorice and a lash of vanilla from the oak – serious stuff.
