Cornas, Guy Farge, 2014

33.99

A true treasure of the wine world and one of my absolute faves. Heady with the scent of blackcurrants and raspberries it just leaps out of the glass reminding you of how great Syrah can be. South of St Joseph, the village of Cornas marks the end of the northern Cotes du Rhone with some 70 hectares planted to vine on unforgiving hillsides.

Cornas is a big wine in every respect, the granitic soils seem to draw the best out of Syrah, its fieryness and raspy tannins tamed by two winters in oak. The nose is huge and almost savage with the scent of crushed berries and tar  - but don't be fooled -  for behind this is a surprising elegance and delicacy, with low alcohol levels of around 13% almost unheard of in the Rhone.
