The steep hillsides of the “Roasted Slope” above Ampuis are home to one of the world’s finest reds. Dark, deep purple in colour, intense and voluptuous, yet more delicate than its neighbour Hermitage, the wines of Cote Rotie provide the ideal transition from the elegance of Burgundy to the power of the hot South.
Usually the preserve of small specialist merchants, the wines international profile was raised by the efforts of Marcel Guigal, whose methods, oak handling, and fruit selection are routinely followed by growers on some of the most abrupt hills outside of the Mosel. I can’t tell you how much I love this wine. The emphasis is on cleanliness of fruit. Flair rather than brute force, making it enjoyable now even though it will live for another 15 years. It’s soft and seductive, with ripe, garden fruits, rather than the smell of the garrigue, classy vanilla oak and a finish that will follow you on your search for another precious bottle.
