'Is there something wrong with this?' Katie asked, checking out the colour, as I handed her a glass of the 98. 'No, it’s exactly as it should be', I answered, burying my proboscis in the pungently delightful, amber, nectar - I don’t mean Fosters. If you have never experienced the delicate charms of old Chenin Blanc, or Pineau de la Loire as it’s known locally, you are missing out on one of the wine worlds best kept secrets. The first thing you get are flowers, not cheeky little spring buds, but deeply perfumed big blooms. Then a waxy, lanolin-like, honeycomb aroma that almost implies sweetness. But when you taste it you are taken aback by the searingly electric freshness of the acidity and a finish to die for as you heartbreakingly spy the rapidly depleting bottle.
