It's hard to farm vines amongst the seriously, spiky crags of the Dentelles de Montmirail, but the back breaking work required is handsomely rewarded by some of the finest wines of Gigondas.

This is a wine of the garrigue stone lands, filled with regional character, honesty and truth.

Laurent Brusset's south facing, low yielding terraces hold a decent portion of Mourvedre ensuring excellent power and structure and when I go looking for wine it is this sort of distinct local character that draws me in,

True Gigondas should have the kind of heady, winey, swooning character of Grenache grown on rich yellow clay, with cleanliness of fruit and a total absence of pourriture or rot. Inky black and with aromas not of fruit, but of the land from which it comes, it possesses a kind of damp forest floor character - genuine gout de terroir

It's big, aggressive and a bit demanding, but if you're the kind of drinker who doesn't shy away from that sort of thing, welcome to heaven.
