I adore this wine! It’s not often that I rave about New World Pinot but this is a little diamond of a wine to rival the best of the Cote de Nuits. This most aromatic and powerful of Kooyong’s Pinots comes from a single vineyard plot on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. The fruit is fermented for 15 days in large oak foudres with natural yeast strains. Malo is in barrel with maturation in French oak, for 17 months, then bottled without fining or filtration. Quite pale in colour and savoury, rather than fruit driven, this has all the earthy, feral, fungal notes you would expect from a good Gevrey. It will go on for another 5 years – just not in my house!
