Man O War, Bellerophon Syrah Viognier 2014,

If you were guilty of thinking that New Zealand only made wines from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, think again! For me, the real excitement lies with Syrah and you can justifiably believe the hype.

Man O War’s ‘Bellerophon’ is a blend of 96% Syrah, with a splash of Viognier. ‘Like the Rhone’ says you ‘Aye says I’ with all the pretty perfume and restrained power to boot. Named after the bay on Waiheke Isand, where James Cook anchored on his first voyage in 1769,  Man O’ War maintain that the greatest wines are made in the vineyard, each small parcel carefully tended, hand harvested and lavished with love.

The 2014 Bellerophon is a classic, with a gorgeously lifted nose of violets, raspberries and some telltale white pepper. Careful management of the stem and Viognier components, together with a bit of whole bunch fermentation, gives a soft, elegant and pretty palate packed with ripe red berries and generous, yet firm tannins. The finish is super long and delightful and will keep ten years if you can leave it alone. Perhaps Cook should have taken a few bottles to Hawaii!
