Cannonau di Sardegna, Picco del Sole, 2015

9.49

A full- throttle, dry red from the eastern end of the island of Sardinia. Cannonau, occasionally called, Cannonao, is a specific clone of Spain’s Garnacha or the Grenache of France. Yields are productive and the vine is extremely well suited to the islands dry and windy conditions in both its red and white forms.

DOC Cannonau di Sardegna requires at least 13.5 alc for its basic, dry, red rising to a whopping 15% for superiore which can resemble a sort of rustic port. This example is at the minimum for the DOC and has the hallmarks of the varieties simple, sweet fruitiness married with a touch of herbal earthiness with a minimum of one year in oak.
