Picpoul de Pinet, Domaine Roquemoliere, 2017

Relatively unknown,  outside its native Languedoc, until recently (well the past four years or so) - Picpoul is on trend and very now. A small oasis of white grapes in a sea of red, Picpoul is Pinet and vice versa. Although it gained VDQS status in 1947 and came under the umbrella of Coteau du Languedoc  in 1985 the wines were traditionally, and rather disappointingly, used as a base for Vermouth particularly Martini.

Picpoul can now be found on the wine lists of most trendy, fish-friendly, restaurants . Is it due to the racing green, retro bottle, is it its charming name, or are folks belatedly waking up the the round, fleshy, smoky charms of this refreshingly ripe and nutty wine.
