Viognier IGP, Domaine de la Janasse 2016

Occasionally, during a tasting, a wine just stands out from the flight, even if it sits amongst some equally fabulous examples. This is such a wine.
One of two outstanding and fascinating IGP’s from Christophe and Isabelle Sabon at Domaine de la Janasse in the Southern Rhone, on the edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, near the La Crau plateau.
This is 100% Viognier grown without pesticides or insecticides and manure fed. Maturation is on sediment 60% in vat and 40% in barrel of which 25% are new.
It’s big and juicy with enough oomph and pizazz to deliver even when we returned to it after some reds. The nose is classic peach and apricot, with hints of dried tropical fruit. Medium to full bodied with great texture and mouthfeel and the most delicious balance of deep concentration and fresh acidity ending with a scrumptiously silky, honeyed finish.
