If you ever feel the need to move away from Kong-like reds - concentrated to a jelly, smothered in new oak and swimming in alcohol - consider the wines of Saint Chinian’s Thierry Navarre . These are simple, straightforward wines with the emphasis firmly on the quality and expression of pure fruit. Thierry farms a dozen hectares on the dark schistous soils of Roquebrun in a natural amphitheatre of verdant green.
His ‘Oeillades’ – an indigenous Occitan grape, closely related to Cinsault, is a natural, vrai wine of the garrigue lands. Lovely, leggy and limber, it just trip-trapps-hops-n-skips over those rickety-racketty taste buds. The bee’s knees, the cat’s pyjamas the dog’s b******s
