If you’ve ever been to a really good Tapas Bar – choose carefully as they are ten a penny – take a look at the wine list and the chances are you will find a Mencia from Bierzo. Cherry red with a strikingly purple rim, it has a range of smells encompassing raspberries and blackberries mixed with oregano, pepper, spice and a whiff of woodsmoke. Its super traditional, despite the cool label, from 30-90 year old vines, clarified with egg white and coarsely filtered. If you think that Spanish reds are only made from Tempranillo, think again.
