Bodegas Tajinaste, Listan Negro, 2016

Would you believe that a wine from Tenerife has just been featured in Decanter magazine – neither would I. Now, they are not quite as trendy as Etna, but watch this space. These are ungrafted vines – phylloxera never reached Tenerife- organically farmed, and many are over 100 years old. Tajiniste is a small, family owned, winery in the Valle de la Oratava about 500 metres above sea level and tempered by the vientos alisios or trade winds which whizz around the north side of the island. The indigenous red grape is Listan Negra (similar to the Mission of North America) giving a kind of redcurrant fruited wine, tinged with chocolate and hints of deep n’ dusty spice. Clean as a whistle, delicately delicious, distinctly un-Spanish and salivatingly sweet on the finish.
