Godello, Alma de Blanco, Pazo Das Tapias, 2017

I absolutely love this wine. Godello, a native grape of Galicia (the home of Albarino) is capable of producing white wines of exceptional quality and finesse, particularly in the areas surrounding Valdeorras. Intensely floral with aromas of peaches and nectarines, great natural acidity and a lively, refreshing spritziness it is one of the most exciting, indigenous Spanish varieties.

Manuel Mendez, far from home and fresh out of fuel, walked into a petrol station and unexpectedly encountered an old friend manning the till. The friend handed him a bottle of the  local wine and Manuel was so smitten that he sought out the estate and bought it – a la Victor Kyam.

Making wines from Mencia and Godello, from 30 year old vines at Pazos Verin in Oudense near Monterrey, he could probably do with a better label, but, as ever, it's what's in the bottle that counts.
